Block 5 section of E. State Street in Downtown Rockford is my family's favorite place for pizza -
hands down. The BEST Pizza!
On this particular evening, with the onset of school and the winding down of summer, we restarted our traditional Thursday evening dinners out. The kids pick the restaurant on alternate weeks. My eldest chose Deli Italia, citing the pizza. I chose dining in, citing that I was hot and tired and needed the air conditioning and a cold beer.
Thursdays at Deli Italia are $10 beer and burger nights. Lucky us! My youngest stuck with her favorite mostaccioli, while my son and I went with the burger. Wow, and what a burger! Kudos to the man in the kitchen Moe~ who came out and talked with us about his burger process.
The Deli Italia burger is 100% ground sirloin, gently pattied so as not to toughen or compress the meat. Each week there is a specialty burger - this week was the Italian. Served on a brioche bun, this 1/2 pound burger was filled with homemade steak sauce and sauteed red onions. Topped with three cheese and bacon, served with additional homemade steak sauce and lettuce, tomato, onion. Oh my, was this a delicious combination of beef, sauce, cheese and bacon. Yes, I ate my entire 1/2 pound burger, bun and all.
The fries, as pictured, are hand sliced wedges oven baked in olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper. While not a traditional french fry, they were meaty inside and crispy outside, a decent way to satisfy your starchy craving.
While not officially back in a Thursday burger challenge mode, I welcome your recommendations and I look forward to writing about more great - and occasionally mediocre - local burgers.
