This location is the home of the old Crystal Pistol, one of Jim Vitale's first restaurants. There is still a lot of his signature antiques and old world charm to the main dining room.
Their extensive menu is eclipsed by the Cajun Fried Potato Salad. O.M.G. This is the best food on the planet. It is fried, gooey cheesy, bacony, oniony, spicy decadence.
My BFF dislikes spicy food - so she will mix a 1/2 order of the Cajun FPS with a full order of coleslaw. The combination of cooling crunch with the spicy potato salad is, if this is even possible, an improvement on the plain Cajun FPS. Think Carolina BBQ sandwich topped with coleslaw. This is a similar intermingling of warm heat and cool crunch.
You can see that the Thursday Burger Challenge necessitates the ordering of french fries. These are for judging only, my order of Cajun FPS is off camera just waiting for me.
I don't usually let the staff know that I am writing about their food and restaurant. This day, for some reason I did. The Fatty's menu contains not a single plain cheeseburger. But with a few requests, this is the burger challenge I received. We swapped the firmer onion roll for this soft split top bun. The grilled onions and Fatty's special sauce were on the side.
I ordered the Little Guy, a 1/3 pound Angus burger with both American and cheddar cheeses. While this burger is not cooked to medium, it was still juicy and flavorful without dripping grease down my wrists. The bun was very soft, held together well and didn't overpower the meat.
The fries? Well, compared to the Cajun FPS they totally stunk. But, as a french fry goes - they were OK. Thick steak cuts as you can see in the picture, decently cooked so they were meaty on the insides and just barely crispy on the outside.
This burger is a 4 out of five stars. It is currently in second place as the best burger. Fatty's Pub receives a 3.5 out of 5 start for the stellar waitress on this challenge day. If you are in the Dekalb/Sycamore area, please stop for lunch or dinner at Fatty's, you won't be disappointed.
