Recently, when I polled for recommendations, a friend suggested the Stone Eagle Tavern. I balked. But, as a locally owned restaurant that serves burgers, they are by default on the Thursday Challenge list. Yesterday was their day. I did not have high expectations. I was thinking I would have a few bites, make a few notes, snap a picture or two and check them off as mediocre.
I was so very, very wrong. Thus far, this is the BEST burger of the challenge.
While I still have a number of restaurants on the Thursday Burger Challenge list, this 10 oz. example of Black Angus burger excellence will be hard to beat.
I always order my burger medium.
This hand pattied burger was topped with a thick slice of cheddar cheese and overflowed the bun, it was so large. The bun was substantial enough to not fall apart, but inconsequential enough not to overly fill me up nor interfere with the beef and cheese flavors. My only complaint, the 'special seasoning' was non-existent, the sandwich could really use a liberal dose of salt/pepper/special seasoning.
I was pleasantly surprised that there is a chef in Rockford who can actually cook a burger to medium! He or she works at Stone Eagle! Horray!!! Perhaps they could give classes in burger grilling?
The fries? Yes, the look like McDonald's fries. They taste like McDonald's fries. Consistent, crispy, not overly greasy, judiciously salted.
Stone Eagle has an extensive menu, with eleven (11!) burger choices. The restaurant is clean, family friendly, the parking lot is large and plowed, they have a full bar, and the waitstaff is professional and friendly.
My bill total was $11.99, pre tip. I did make two meals out of this large hamburger - I just finished the second half as I sat here writing this morning. Still delicious.
My review from 2010? That still stands.
But my review in 2013? Please give Stone Eagle your dining dollars.
